Debbie Gurtler
Researcher
Debbie Gurtler is a recent graduate of Brigham Young University with a BA in Family History/Genealogy. Her coursework included classes in advanced Hispanic research and United States research, in both the South and New England. While a student at BYU, Debbie completed two internships. She spent six weeks at the prestigious New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston where she performed research assignments and assisted patrons in locating materials. Her other internship consisted of six weeks visiting and researching in most of the major national archives of Spain as well as a few provincial and municipal archives. While in Spain she studied the impact of women’s inheritance in a small Spanish village, for which she received two research grants. She is fluent in Spanish after having lived in South America with her family for five years.
Debbie enjoys deciphering difficult documents in English, Spanish, and Latin. She has taught genealogy classes for beginners in both English in Spanish and enjoys helping others gain a love for family history. She loves doing research in the Southern United States and enjoys perusing land records and tax lists.
While a student at BYU, she worked as a research assistant for several professors in the History Department. She has worked on projects tracing the ancestors of a freed slave; performed an analysis of English wills for a social history project; and tracked the lives of polygamous men. She also worked as the Head Research Assistant for the Center for Family History and Genealogy where she performed various research tasks that included working on the Mormon Immigration Index.
