William R. Ward

William R. Ward, BA, FRSAI, FSA(Scot), AG®, has been professionally involved in genealogy and family history for over thirty years. He attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Central Washington State College, Brigham Young University (Associate of Arts in Family History), Regents College of the University of the State of New York (Bachelor of Arts in History), and has undertaken additional (graduate) studies at the University of Utah (history), Utah State University (folklore), the University of Stirling (Scottish studies), and the University of Dundee (archives and records management). He is also a graduate of the National Archives' National Institute on Genealogical Research, and of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission's Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents.
An Accredited Genealogist with specialties in England, Scotland, Mid-South, Gulf South, and LDS Church Records, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, and of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. His expertise in heraldry has been recognized by the award of certificates in heraldry from the Heraldry Society [London] and the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada. He is a former editor of the Utah Genealogical Association's Genealogical Journal.
From 1988 to 2000, he was a Systems User Specialist (Systems Analyst), and later, Senior Extraction Specialist, in the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was responsible for many products used by genealogists around the world, including Personal Ancestral File, FamilySearch, TempleReady, Family History Resource Files, and the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System.
He taught courses in family history and genealogy in several LDS Church Institutes of Religion, and for Brigham Young University Department of Continuing Education, and is currently Director of the Salt Lake Centre for Heritage Studies of Smallwood College.
In 2000, he received the prestigious Minuteman Award from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, primarily for his service to the society as Genealogist General. He is a member of numerous genealogical, heraldic, historical, and hereditary societies, and was listed in the 1990 edition of Who's Who in Genealogy and Heraldry.
